For 10 years, Baxter Media has introduced the industry to a new group of ambitious Ambassadors as they embark on exciting futures in travel and tourism. There are so many excellent adventures and opportunities in tourism that we are always wondering: where have their careers in tourism taken them?
From working for a well respected tour operator and at an iconic Canadian hotel brand, Travel Courier caught up with two recent BSAP alumni to see what they are doing now.
What have you been up to since being named a Baxter Ambassador in 2023? It still seems unreal that a whole year has passed since BSAP happened. I am working as a Product Manager with Senior Discovery Tours in Toronto. I have also started learning French to enhance my skills and open up more opportunities for myself in the tourism industry.
What’s one item on your travel bucket list, and why? Rovaniemi in Finland is on the top of my bucket list, mainly because of my fascination for the Santa Claus Village and the whole magical experience it brings to life. I also want to get a certificate for crossing over the Arctic Circle, experience the Northern Lights and take part in some of the activities unique to the Arctic like reindeer sleigh rides and the cultural experiences.
What did you gain from participating in BSAP? The experience of the whole process was my biggest learning. In addition, I got a chance to build my network which was very important for me as a newcomer to the Canadian tourism industry.
What is one thing you learned about yourself during the BSAP program? I knew I was good in time management, but when I participated in BSAP and had to juggle my assignments and presentation with deadlines on the day next to each other, I understood that I can perform well under pressure.
Would you recommend BSAP to future graduating students? Absolutely, it’s an experience not to be missed. It helps you gain self confidence and understand where you can improve your skills.
What have you been up to since being named a Baxter Ambassador in 2023? I have been keeping very busy this past year. I finished my presidency with Future Hospitality Society, an organization which supports future hospitality leaders. I also became an assistant general manager with the restaurant company where I completed my student internship. Near the end of 2023, I was contacted by the prestigious Fairmont Chateau Whistler with an offer to become a general manager of one of its restaurants. After careful consideration, I packed my bags and moved across the country. That is what I love about this industry. It can take you anywhere in the world!
What’s one item on your travel bucket list, and why? If I had to pick one (and the list is long), I would drive from Canada’s east coast to the west coast. Canada offers so much beauty, and while I have had the chance to travel much of the world, I want to explore Canada to its fullest.
What did you gain from participating in BSAP? Winning the BSAP program was a turning point for me. It not only boosted my confidence but also opened doors to opportunities I might have overlooked before. It’s a testament to the transformative power of this program, and I encourage everyone to believe in themselves and take that leap of faith.
What is one thing you learned about yourself during the BSAP program? One of my professors encouraged me to participate in BSAP. Before doing so, I questioned whether I was good enough for it. But, with her encouragement, I applied and was thrilled to be one of the finalists. When I was the winning candidate, it was a transformative moment. It taught me that I should not be the one who holds myself back. Explore those possibilities and take chances.
Would you recommend BSAP to future graduating students? Absolutely! Participating in BSAP will not only provide you with a deep understanding of our dynamic industry and make lifelong connections, but it will also open doors to career opportunities. BSAP is the only travel and tourism student mentoring program of its kind in Canada. Therefore, you will not find an opportunity like this anywhere in the country.
