Carrier will soon link Montreal with the Spanish city

The tourist board for the Mediterranean-fronting city of Valencia, Spain is welcoming Air Transat’s announcement that it will begin linking Montreal and the Spanish city in June, a development that it says will enable it to make significant inroads into the Canadian market.

The service will begin June 20, featuring a city that has generally taken a backseat to some other cities in the Iberian nation when it comes to attracting Canadians.

“This connection makes it easier than ever for Canadian travellers to experience the rich culture, vibrant history, and breathtaking landscapes of Valencia,” says Paula Llobet, Valencia city councillor for tourism, innovation and international investment. “Beyond that, it also opens the gateway to explore more of Spain, uncovering destinations that go beyond the familiar and offering a truly immersive Spanish experience.”

Valencia attracted around 15,000 Canadian visitors in 2023, trailing the likes of Madrid and Barcelona. The direct route will allow Canadians to reach Valencia in approximately seven hours, making travel to Spain’s third-largest city more convenient.

“This route to Valencia is a new gateway for Canadians to discover another amazing destination in Spain, broadening the range of regions and cities our country has to offer,” noted Isabel Martín, consul for tourism affairs at the Embassy of Spain in Canada. “Connectivity with Canada is essential to strengthen Spain’s position as a leading tourist destination in the market.”

The route is also seen as a valuable link for business ties and offers an accessible gateway to explore Spain’s East Coast.

“Valencia is unique among Spain’s cities for its blend of Mediterranean charm, vibrant culture, and a laid-back ‘slow life’ spirit,” a Visit Valencia official said. “With nearly 300 days of sunshine each year, it offers the perfect climate to explore historic streets, relax on 20 kilometres of blue-flag beaches, or unwind at lively terraces. The city is home to the beautiful Turia Gardens, a lush 9-kilometre-long park created in the former riverbed, ideal for cycling, jogging or simply relaxing. Valencia is also famous for its Mediterranean cuisine, especially paella, and local treats like horchata de chufa. For festival lovers, the city hosts vibrant celebrations like Las Fallas, a UNESCO-listed event. Valencia’s mix of history, modern architecture, rich culture, and natural beauty makes it a one-of-a-kind destination in Spain, perfect for any type of traveller.”

Valencia is seen as an ideal destination for a short getaway. In just three days, visitors can explore the historic centre, visiting iconic sites like the Valencia Cathedral and the UNESCO-listed Silk Exchange, or enjoy the vibrant Central Market.  Tourism officials suggest then spending time on local beaches.

Meanwhile, Air Transat said it’s happy to add new destinations.

“The addition of this route to our summer program, an exclusive non-stop connection… reflects our commitment to offering unique and diverse travel options. This route allows us to continue expanding our presence in the Spanish market and to offer even more opportunities to explore this wonderful destination, ” said Sebastian Ponce, chief revenue officer of Transat.
