Toronto-based tour operator says vegan travellers will have lots of options
A Toronto tour operator that participated in a recent festival in Ontario’s capital promoting vegan lifestyles is applauding the Korea Tourism Organization for also reaching out to those who have plant-based diets.
Lisa Lau of Okushu Tours, who frequently visits Asia, says vegans who choose Korea for their vacations will find no shortage of restaurant and food options.
“I believe that it is good for the Korea Tourism Organization to participate at this vegan event because it can promote a positive image and exposure,” she says of VegTO Fest. “Participating in a vegan event aligns with the growing trend towards plant-based diets and ethical consumerism. It allows the Korea Tourism Organization to showcase Korea’s vegan-friendly options and attract a wider audience.
“By engaging with the vegan community, the organization can directly connect with potential travellers who actively seek out destinations that cater to their dietary needs and values.
“Korean cuisine offers a variety of plant-based dishes, and showcasing these at the event can highlight the country’s rich culinary heritage and cultural diversity for Canadian audiences. The history of Veganism is long and so is the heritage of Korean cuisine,” says Lau, who cites Korean cuisine’s “diverse selection of plant-based dishes. Korean cuisine, with its long history, offers a variety of vegan-friendly options, showcasing the country’s culinary roots and promoting a broader understanding of Korean culture.”
Lau notes that vegan Korean food is partially shaped by the strong Buddhist influence in the Asian nation.
Lau acknowledges that vegan travellers remain a minority but adds their numbers are increasing, something she in part attributes to a heightened awareness of the health and environmental benefits of plant-based diets. “More Canadians are embracing veganism for both personal well-being and concerns about the impact of animal agriculture on the environment. Naturally, this dietary shift extends to their travel choices, creating a demand for vegan-friendly options.”
But Lau adds that the availability of vegan options worldwide has improved notably, with vegan restaurants and food choices more prevalent, making it easier for vegan travellers to maintain their dietary preferences while exploring new destinations.
“Furthermore, online platforms and social media play a crucial role in promoting veganism and sharing information about vegan-friendly travel destinations and experiences. This increased visibility encourages more people to consider and embrace vegan travel,” Lau states.
Lau adds that her company was pleased it was able to take part in TOVeg Fest, stating that the festival “aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainable travel and promoting healthy lifestyles. In today’s world, there is an increasing demand for plant-based diets as people become more aware of the ethical and environmental impact of their food choices. Okushu Tours recognizes this trend and strives to provide unique and immersive travel experiences that cater to this growing demand.”
Lau notes her own company will happily host vegans wanting to see Korea.
“Our Korea cultural and wellness tour is designed to give travellers an authentic glimpse into the traditional Korean way of life while emphasizing holistic well-being,” she reports. “One of the highlights of this tour is the opportunity to learn vegan cooking at a temple in Seoul. Temples in Korea have a long-standing tradition of preparing plant-based meals, and their culinary skills are highly regarded.
“During this hands-on cooking class, travellers will work alongside experienced temple chefs, learning how to prepare delicious and nutritious vegan dishes using fresh, seasonal ingredients. They will also gain insight into the Buddhist philosophy behind veganism and the importance of mindful eating.
“By participating in this event and offering our Korea cultural and wellness tour, Okushu Tours aims to raise awareness about the benefits of plant-based diets and ethical consumerism. We believe that travel can be a powerful force for good, and we are committed to creating experiences that promote sustainability, well-being, and cultural exchange.”
