Do assertions by tourism authorities that Philadelphia is at the epicentre of American history ring a (Liberty) Bell?
Well, if they don’t those authorities will cheerfully update you about the city’s history-steeped past.
“History is a big part of what makes Philadelphia stand out from other big cities. As America’s first World Heritage City, Philadelphia is the birthplace of the United States, where the Founding Fathers met, discussed, debated and formed a new country,” says Jerry Grymek of LMA Communications, which represents Philadelphia in this country. “From the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, recognized as America’s oldest natural history museum, to (UNESCO World Heritage Site) Independence Hall (which is where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were drafted and signed) to the symbolic Liberty Bell, Philadelphia is perfect, whether you are the ultimate history buff or just interested in rich storytelling.”

Grymek notes visitors can very easily take self-guided tours or guided tours showcasing a multitude of attractions, including “everything from the Liberty Bell, known as the symbol of (American) freedom, to the Betsy Ross House, recognized as the birthplace of the American flag.
“Philadelphia has a dedicated Historic District with plenty of must-see historic attractions that trace the origins of American democracy. Originally at the heart of Philadelphia’s original city boundaries, all of the historic sites and buildings played a major factor in Philadelphia being declared the first World Heritage City in the U.S., as designated by the Organization of World Heritage Cities.”

Meanwhile, Grymek says those visiting Philadelphia will find a host of other interesting sides to the city.

Grymek adds that it is very easy to get to Philadelphia by plane, train or car from major Canadian cities. From Montreal, it is roughly a 7.5-hour drive and an 8-hour drive from Toronto and direct flights are roughly 1.5 hours.

As well, Montreal conductor and pianist Yannick Nézet-Séguin is now in his 10th season as music director of The Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the leading orchestras in the world.
