Winter is coming... and many destinations are ready for its arrival

Ian Stalker

Cold-weather activities can be cool.

In fact, many of those involved in the travel industry say winter weather can lead to great travel experiences.

Here are some winter suggestions for outdoorsy sorts.

Randy Snape

Korea Tourism Organization

Randy Snape wants to make it clear that Korea sees a changing of the seasons.

And Snape, with the Korea Tourism Organization’s Toronto office, says one of those seasons includes winter, a time of year embraced by energetic Koreans.

“In Korea, winter sports have been a popular pastime for a number of years,” he reports. “Skiing and snowboarding have been popular for a while with the number of mountains in the country and the number of resorts in and around the Seoul area. Yuna Kim (whose many accomplishments in figure skating include being 2010 Olympic women’s champion) really helped the country develop a deep interest in winter sports, especially in figure skating, as its popularity exploded. The most recent increase in interest in a popular winter sport in Korea is curling. Normally, Korea is an unknown in the curling world, but the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics really helped to put a number of sports in the spotlight and Korea’s athletics as well. Curling is certainly one of those as the women’s team who qualified for the (2018 Winter) Olympics based on the country being the host nation and an unknown (women’s team) in the curling world won silver and beat out long-time curling heavyweights Canada, Switzerland and many more.”

Snape says the Winter Olympics were a huge success for Korea in that they highlighted Korea’s athletes, the destination, and helped further popularize winter sports in Korea. “For travel agents who were not familiar with destination prior to the Olympics, there are always a few things that they are able to recall now. The Olympics really helped to put Korea in the spotlight worldwide and truly makes approaching both consumers and agents easier as they are more familiar with the destination.

“Korea hosts a wide variety of resorts throughout the country as ski and snowboarding remain very popular winter sports. The ease of access to resorts surrounding the Seoul area with free shuttles being offered by the resorts has increased their popularity. Skating is also a popular past time and hockey is beginning to show some promise in the country as well. Curling is becoming big because of the Garlic Girls (the silver medal-wining women’s team, so named because they are from an area known for garlic production) and have become a sensation in Korea. For travellers who have never curled before, this is a must-have experience at the Olympic Venue in Gangwando, with a class on curling. This class is available year-round and from personal experience one of the best team building exercises that I have done for small groups..”

Meanwhile, Snape says those visiting Korea in winter needn’t fear that they’ll have to contend with extreme cold.

“Korea has the same seasons as what we would expect in Ontario without as much snow,”  he reports. “The cold is almost as cold, depending on where in Korea you are, so it is best that travellers prepare for winter with proper coats, etc. The capital of Seoul does receive snow, but not nearly the amounts that are received in the outlying provinces. I think it should be said that Korea did host a Winter Olympics and therefore snowy weather can be expected. We receive colder weather than Vancouver, but not nearly as cold as Calgary, Toronto or Montreal.”

Last Frontier

British Columbia

Last Frontier believes going downhill can be financially rewarding for Canadians.

The B.C. Heliskiing company, which recently offered people in this country 50% discounts, reports it has decided to open additional dates to allow more Canadians to experience the world’s largest heliskiing area, with 10,100 square kms of terrain in northern British Columbia.

“Canadians who book with Last Frontier this year will have the opportunity to ski on terrain that receives an annual bounty of 15-25 meters of snow at half price!” it says. “Last Frontier is excited for the opportunity to showcase to Canadians the epic adventure that exists in their own backyards.

“The strong demand for Last Frontier’s offer is great news for Canadian tourism operators willing to try new things this winter to keep operations going and staff working. Last Frontier is pleasantly surprised with the strong response from Canadians, and believes that this year’s season will grow domestic demand for their heliskiing experiences, since Canadians who would never have considered them in the past will now know first-hand what heliskiing with Last Frontier is all about — the company gets a considerable amount of repeat business from skiers and snowboarders who can’t wait to hit the slopes again after their first unforgettable heliskiing experience.”

Germain Hotels

Quebec and Alberta

All-inclusive packages clearly aren’t exclusive to southern sunspots.

Germain Hotels has all-inclusive winter packages at Quebec’s Le Germain Charlevoix Hotel & Spa, while powder hounds haven’t been overlooked either as the Le Germain Hotel Calgary and affiliated Alt Hotel Calgary East Village are joining forces with the Banff Sunshine Village ski resort in for a city-and-mountain getaway.

Nestled between river and mountains, and less than 90 minutes from Quebec City, Le Germain Charlevoix Hotel & Spa is billed as the perfect escape for the best that winter has to offer. Snowshoeing, skating and skiing that is 30 minutes away by car await, as do gourmet and artistic discoveries, thanks in part to many art galleries. Le Germain Charlevoix Hotel & Spa offers an all-inclusive winter package from Dec. 18 until April 6 that includes accommodation, all meals at Le Bercail or Les Labours restaurants, drinks and snacks, activities offered at the hotel as well as access to the thermal experience at Spa Nordique Le Germain. To begin the stay on a festive note, a bottle of bubbly will await guests in their room.

The exercise room, and fat bikes, are included in the package. Guests can enjoy the hotel’s ice rink as of January, subject to favourable weather conditions. Le Spa Nordique Le Germain also awaits those staking at the hotel.

“When Baie-Saint-Paul puts on its wintery-white coat, it’s truly magical, like a marvellous landscape worthy of the painter Vladimir Horik,” says Thierry Eck, hotel general manager. “Our hotel then becomes a cozy nest where it’s nice to snuggle up after a day outdoors. The all-inclusive formula is perfect to welcome our guests as if they were at the cottage.”

The All-inclusive winter package starts at $310.50 per person, per day, based on double occupancy. Service is included, but taxes are not. There’s a minimum stay of three nights for the package.

Meanwhile, guests staying at Germain Hotels in Calgary receive a 20% discount on ski lift tickets at Banff Sunshine Village. The two family-owned businesses are teaming up to make sure guests enjoy their trip to the city and skiing in powdery snow. “Whether they choose the cozy luxury of Le Germain Hotel Calgary or the no-frills comfort of Alt Hotel Calgary East Village, guests will find the perfect pied-à-terre to explore the city. Whether dazzling in the Calgary Central Library, reminiscing on old musical hits at the Studio Bell or discovering new flavours of its talented chefs such as Connie DeSousa, John Jackson and Darren MacLean, to name a few, Calgary is well worth a visit before dashing down the ski slopes of Banff Sunshine Village. No minimum stay required to take advantage of this offer,” Germain Hotels says.
