The newly promoted industry veteran shares advice for agents, his favourite part of being in the travel industry and much more
Congrats on your promotion! What are your goals for this new position?
Thank you so much! I think it’s easy to jump in and change this or that, but the reality is, we are doing exceptionally well. I want to build on that success. I’ll continue to maintain our customer-centric culture and focus in on leveraging what works in our ever-changing industry.
Tell us about yourself and how long you’ve been in the travel industry?
I’ve been in the travel business for about 30 years, first in the corporate side of the industry and then to the leisure side. They are both very different, but I have enjoyed both sides and learned things that can be applied to each.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
I know it’s a cliché but it’s still about being in front of our members and advisors. To really understand the business, you need to listen to those dealing with clients every day.
What’s something that a lot of people may not know about you?
I’m pretty much an open book, people know I’m a Leaf fan and live in Toronto. People may not know that I don’t get nervous when public speaking which I can appreciate being crippling for many.
What advice do you have for travel advisors right now? What about for newcomers to the industry?
My advice remains the same as it always has been. Focus in on the products you love to sell. Train, train, train! Knowledge is something people will pay you for. Pick a lane and be an expert.
Do you have a travel ritual or something you try to do everywhere you go?
I go into auto mode when I travel otherwise I will lose everything. I’ll be that guy they call back to the gate because he forgot his phone or laptop. So, I put everything back in the same place all the time. Same backpack, same pocket etc. Oh, Nexus is the greatest thing so get one!
What trends are you noticing based on agent bookings or Canadian demand?
Travel is in demand and advisors are even more so. Regardless of what is happening geopolitically or economically, people shift where they may go but they are still going, especially Canadians. We love to travel.
What destination is next on your dream travel list and why?
Last year we did the Antarctic which was unbelievable. I’m looking at a safari or Galapagos next.
What’s something you wish that everybody understood or knew about travel advisors?
I believe some people think it’s an easy job. They think: “Hey, if I can book it online how hard can it be?” But we all know, to do it well takes a ton of knowledge. That becomes even more apparent when things don’t go as planned. The general public needs to know that this can be a very profitable career that provides people with what they are looking for – income, relationships, incredible travel and a business that gets into your blood and you’ll never leave.
Do you have anything to add?
We are so blessed to be in this industry. I know that gets lost at times, but I started with financial positions at GE and American Express but once in travel I have realized that what we do is a ton of fun and can, literally, change the world. Keep at it and make a difference!
