Industry interview: talking travel and trends with Nathalie Tanious
By Ann Ruppenstein /  January 30, 2025

The president & CEO of H.I.S. Canada Travel Inc., the parent company of TravelBrands, looks back on 30 years in the travel industry

Tell us about yourself and how long you’ve been in the travel industry?

I’m Nathalie Tanious and I’ve spent over 30 years in the travel industry. I started as a contact centre agent back in college, and from those early days, I knew I’d found my calling. Even though it’s been a few decades now, that initial passion hasn’t faded – if anything, it’s grown stronger with each year. Travel fuels me both professionally and personally, and I make it a priority to explore the world with my loved ones whenever I can.

2025 is here! What destinations are popular right now?

Sun destinations remain a top choice for Canadians, with Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Florida, and Hawaii leading the way. These destinations consistently offer the ideal combination of great weather and diverse experiences for all types of travellers.

What’s trending for Europe?

In Europe, Spain, Greece, Italy, and Portugal continue to be at the top with their timeless appeal and lasting popularity year after year.

Looking back on 2024, what were some of your biggest accomplishments?

Last year was all about stepping into my new role as president & CEO, embracing its responsibilities and driving forward our vision. It’s been a pivotal time of growth, focus, and impact, and I’m proud to have embraced every aspect of it thanks to the immense support from my team.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

The travel industry is filled with incredible people, and I’m truly grateful to work alongside so many of them each day. Our team is dynamic and driven, always learning and pushing for excellence. The partnerships we’ve built – and continue to build – are so rewarding, and there’s nothing like the gift of connecting people with unforgettable travel experiences.

What’s something that a lot of people may not know about you?

I once thought I would be an opera singer! But I guess the travel industry sang to me louder.

What advice do you have for travel advisors right now? What about for newcomers to the industry?

Travel is more than just a job – it’s a passion and a true calling. And for those who embrace it, it never feels like work. To anyone new to the industry, my advice is simple: invest in continuous learning and build strong, meaningful relationships. These are the keys to thriving in this field.

Where did your travels take you last year and which destination stands out the most and why? Anywhere you already want to go back to?

Paris, New York, and Japan were the standout destinations for me this year, and I absolutely fell in love with all three. Visiting Japan was especially memorable. This country is modern, eclectic, and full of history. Plus, it’s a true culinary paradise! I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

What trends are you noticing based on agent bookings or Canadian demand?

We’re seeing a rise in solo travel, as more Canadians seek personal, immersive experiences. Cruises are also continuing to gain popularity, with travellers drawn to their convenience, variety of destinations, and all-inclusive offerings.

What destination is next on your dream travel list and why?

A safari is at the top of my list because it’s a DREAM adventure and I can’t wait to experience the unique wildlife up close!

What’s something you wish that everybody understood or knew about travel advisors?

Travel advisors wear many hats including researcher, planner, advocate, troubleshooter, and more. They pour their expertise into every recommendation, often going above and beyond to make each trip smooth and memorable. It’s a career built on commitment and skill, not just a simple transaction.

Do you have anything to add?

I’m so grateful for this journey! There’s no industry like travel, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us next!
