Off-the-beaten path destinations and Europe bookings are strong
A new year is here! What are some of the key trends for the year ahead?
EK: One notable trend we’ve observed over the past few years—and one I believe is here to stay—is the rise of multi-generational travel. More grandparents are choosing to take the entire family on trips rather than buying traditional gifts. It’s a shift towards creating shared experiences and memories vs tangible goods.
Another trend that we’ve noticed is Baby Boomers embracing the “spend the kids’ inheritance” mentality. More and more often we are hearing comments like, “Let’s go for it; it’s only our kids’ money” and “We’ve earned it and we’re enjoying it.” Older Boomers, particularly those with financially independent children, are more willing to book higher-priced, longer-duration trips knowing their children are already set. The prevailing sentiment is, “We need to do it now before we can’t.” It is an exciting shift in the travel industry, focusing on meaningful, experience-driven adventures and a willingness to invest in those moments.
VA: Looking ahead, there are a few key travel trends we’re excited to see grow. They’re all about making travel easier, more personalized, and more meaningful for our clients. By staying on top of these trends, we’re able to continuously enhance their experience.
- Seamless travel through technology Technology is really stepping up to make travel more convenient and efficient. From automated booking systems to contactless payments and mobile-first experiences, the way we plan trips is getting smoother. For us, this means guiding our clients through these tools and offering stress-free solutions that make their travel plans easier from start to finish.
- Off-the-beaten-path adventures More and more travellers are looking to avoid crowded tourist spots and dive into destinations that offer something unique. Off-the-beaten-path trips are becoming more popular, and we’re excited to curate one-of-a-kind itineraries that showcase hidden gems and authentic local experiences—things our clients will remember long after their trip is over.
- Flexible and resilient booking policies, insurance Given how unpredictable things can be, more travelers are prioritizing flexible booking options and cancellations. We’re staying ahead of the game by offering just that—clear, flexible policies that give our clients peace of mind, knowing that their plans won’t be thrown off track no matter what comes their way.
What’s popular when it comes to Europe?
EK: Italy remains our top European destination, but we’ve noticed a significant rise in interest for travel to the UK, particularly England and Wales. River and Mediterranean Ocean cruises also continue to be popular options, offering an excellent way to explore multiple destinations in a single journey while only unpacking once.
Additionally, there’s a growing demand for off-the-beaten-path experiences. While Italy is still a favorite, clients are now seeking unique and less conventional destinations within the country—beyond the classic spots like Rome, Venice, and Florence—to uncover hidden gems, smaller crowds and more authentic cultural experiences.
VA: When it comes to Europe, Madeira, Portugal is definitely standing out this year. While Portugal is always a favourite, Madeira offers a fresh twist. With stunning landscapes, lush hiking trails, and a mild year-round climate, Madeira is perfect for travellers looking to escape the typical Lisbon and Porto routes. It’s ideal for nature lovers and those wanting to experience a more tranquil, authentic side of Portugal.
Are there any lesser-known destinations that you think are on the rise amongst Canadians?
EK: While Colombia may not be a lesser-known destination, it has recently gained traction after years of being less popular. Travellers are increasingly seeking unique destinations within the Caribbean and Central America region. They’ve experienced all-inclusive resorts but still crave a sunny winter getaway with a fresh and distinctive appeal.
VA: Definitely! There are a couple of places that are really catching the attention of Canadian travellers. Vietnam: It’s growing in popularity due to its mix of vibrant cities, beautiful countryside, and amazing food. Southeast Asia has always been a go-to for Canadians, but Vietnam’s affordability and variety make it even more appealing. With direct flights and a rich culture, it’s becoming a must-visit spot for those seeking adventure without breaking the bank. Colombia: Another one on the rise, Colombia offers everything from vibrant cities like Medellín to the stunning natural beauty of Tayrona National Park. Its mix of culture, adventure, and affordability makes it a great option for Canadians who want to try something a little different. Plus, with direct flights and favourable exchange rates, it’s super accessible. In short, while classic European spots are always in demand, travellers are increasingly seeking fresh alternatives like Madeira, Vietnam, and Colombia to explore new cultures and experiences.
Do you think the already launched UK ETA visa and the upcoming ETIAS will impact bookings?
EK: No, I really don’t think it will impact bookings. So many destinations already require an ETA or visa, and we streamline the process for our clients by assisting with applications to ensure they have everything they need in place.
VA: While the ETA for the UK is an extra requirement, it’s expected to be pretty straight-forward and shouldn’t cause too many issues for travellers. The online application process might cause a bit of confusion at first, especially for those not familiar with it, and there could be minor delays as people adapt to the new system. However, we’re here to help guide our clients through it to ensure their bookings go smoothly without a hitch!
What’s the longest trip you’ve ever booked?
EK: The longest trip I’ve personally booked was an incredible 200-day journey, combining an 80-day Grand Voyage followed by a 120-day World Cruise. For land-based travel, the longest journey I’ve booked was around 60 days, where my clients travelled from Cape Town to Cairo with an extension to Jordan!
VA: The longest trip I’ve ever planned was an amazing 24-day adventure. It included a luxurious river cruise, scenic train journeys, and finished off with a private tour of Italy. Each part of the journey was designed to give my clients the perfect balance of relaxation, exploration, and unforgettable experiences. It was such a joy to create a trip that allowed them to fully immerse themselves in each destination while enjoying all the comfort and personal touches they wanted. Trips like this are my favourite to organize because they’re more than just a vacation—they’re memories that my clients will talk about for years!
