Albufeira touts its appeal as a year-round destination

Portuguese beach destination in the Algarve has lots on offer for Canadians

Those involved in promoting the southern Portuguese beach destination of Albufeira say there’s no need for visitors to pack up and leave once summer comes to an end.

Indeed, the Algarve destination will look attractive at any time of year, says William Delgado of Toronto-based tour operator JM Vacations, which sends people to Portugal.

“Albufeira is an all-seasons destination,” he told a recent Toronto gathering.

The local tourism board says Albufeira has the most beautiful beaches in all Europe, but tourism officials told their Toronto audience that its appeal goes well beyond beaches, with Joana Machado, general manager of the Albufeira Promotion Bureau, stating that a community literally found on the “edge of Europe” also offers the likes of cultural attractions, nature, Jeep safaris and wellness.

Dolphin-spotting safaris are available in a part of the world that cheerfully hosts family vacationers, who among other things will find waterparks.

Among beaches is a 1.9-kilometre stretch of sandy oceanfront that flanks Albufeira’s scenic Old Town, and authorities note that some beaches offer quiet retreats, seeing few foreigners.

Tourism authorities also state that Albufeira is the “largest, liveliest and most exciting of all the resort towns” in the Algarve. Young visitors like to frequent The Strip, known for among other things themed bars.

A New Year’s party leads to a week of partying, with Albufeira having a lively nightlife scene. But tourism authorities are also quick to promote the Old Town, which has cobblestone streets and whitewashed buildings found in a part of the world that began as a fishing village long ago. The Old Town has over 100 restaurants and bars.

Luis Garcia, head of sales for Discovery Hotel Management, which has many hotels throughout Portugal, including such well-known brands as Ramada and Crowne Plaza, said Albufeira is a great place for those wanting to take it easy on their vacations.

“You have the beach,” he said. “It’s a laidback area. You can go to the sea or you can go inland.”

Those who venture inland can explore the area by cycling or hiking if they wish and they can also visit area wineries. Golf is also available. Garcia said the cost of an Albufeira vacation compares favourably with vacations in other parts of Europe.

Meanwhile, Garcia said Portugal’s comparatively smallish size makes it easy for visitors to explore the Iberian nation, with Lisbon only being two hours from Albufeira.

Visitors can travel from southern to northern Portugal in 7 hours, seeing its numerous regions, which have varying cultures and landscapes, Garcia said.

“Each has its own character,” he noted.
