Q&A with Monica Millin, La Dolce Vita Travel

Tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to become a travel advisor?

It’s a long story. I’ll try to summarize. I was working as a manager in a large medical clinic when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Post treatment I found it very difficult to go back to work and face health issues of others, it was a bit of PTSD. So the soul searching began. I had no idea this was a job that could be done from home, which was very appealing to me, as well as being my own boss. This lead me to Trevello (formerly Travel Professionals International when I joined). I’ve never looked back. So from a very traumatic diagnosis I created something for myself that I thoroughly enjoy doing.

What do you specialize in?

FIT Italy!

What do you wish everybody knew about travel advisors?

That we aren’t trying to gouge clients. We want them to have the best time and truly are offering them experiences to remember. And we are knowledgeable.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Creating great itineraries for clients. Getting to know clients and developing friendships with them throughout the process.

What destinations and types of trips are you booking right now?

Italy, Italy, Italy. Fun fact – I was born and lived in Italy, one of my sons is now living there and I go back a few times a year to visit him and to explore Italy. I visit a new area every time I go.

What do you do to grow your clientele?

Word of mouth.

What’s your best piece of advice for new agents?

Find a niche and become an expert in it. It takes time, but it’s so worth it.
