It's now easier for travellers to reach the archipelago

With an additional American Airlines flight from Miami kicking off on Dec. 23, Clive McCoy, director of tourism for the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board, says it’s now easier for travellers to get to the destination. Previously Puerto Rico was a main hub for connectivity but now with up to three daily flights from Miami to Beef Island, there is a lot more choice for leisure vacations.

“I’ve been in tourism for 18 years and we’ve always been challenged with getting to the destination,” McCoy says. “On June 1 of this year we had our first non-stop flight from Miami to the BVI and that was a major accomplishment. When I saw the plane hit the tarmac I couldn’t believe what I was seeing because it’s always been like a unicorn because we always wanted it. We now have up to three daily nonstop flights to the BVI and we couldn’t be happier.”

While the BVI is known as being “the sailing capital of the world and 75% of the rooms in the destination are on the water,” there is accommodation news on land as well.

By the first quarter of 2024, Long Bay Beach Resort will be adding new hillside suites. The property recently introduced four new beachfront buildings including three beachside villa suites with access to a secluded beach area and personal cabana. Meanwhile, Peter Island Resort & Spa will reopen following the impact of hurricanes Irma and Maria. As for a new property, Blunder Bay Estates will be opening soon.

“We are increasing our land-based rooms,” he added.

Earlier this May, the luxury all-inclusive private island resort The Aerial BVI expanded from buy out model to welcoming single-room bookings; and Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina ended its 11-year affiliation with Marriott.

“They are now an independent luxury resort,” he said, noting that a multi-phase upgrade plan is also underway at the property.

Finally, yacht charter company The Moorings has a new market and an improved watersports shop.
