City was pivotal in the fight for American independence

Do assertions by tourism authorities that Philadelphia is at the epicentre of American history ring a (Liberty) Bell?
Well, if they don’t those authorities will cheerfully update you about the city’s history-steeped past.
“History is a big part of what makes Philadelphia stand out from other big cities. As America’s first World Heritage City, Philadelphia is the birthplace of the United States, where the Founding Fathers met, discussed, debated and formed a new country,” says Jerry Grymek of LMA Communications, which represents Philadelphia in this country. “From the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, recognized as America’s oldest natural history museum, to (UNESCO World Heritage Site) Independence Hall (which is where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were drafted and signed) to the symbolic Liberty Bell, Philadelphia is perfect, whether you are the ultimate history buff or just interested in rich storytelling.”
“Through the tourism website VisitPhilly.com, Philadelphia makes sure to pay attention to their roots and the rich history that this world-class city provides. Canadians quickly realize that about the city when they visit and see all of the tributes and dedicated sites to preserving their history. It actually makes visitors appreciate the city more as they find the broader connect to the country’s past.”
Grymek notes visitors can very easily take self-guided tours or guided tours showcasing a multitude of attractions, including “everything from the Liberty Bell, known as the symbol of (American) freedom, to the Betsy Ross House, recognized as the birthplace of the American flag.
“Philadelphia has a dedicated Historic District with plenty of must-see historic attractions that trace the origins of American democracy. Originally at the heart of Philadelphia’s original city boundaries, all of the historic sites and buildings played a major factor in Philadelphia being declared the first World Heritage City in the U.S., as designated by the Organization of World Heritage Cities.”
The visitphilly.com website has an article on the best of the best of the city’s Historic District.
Meanwhile, Grymek says those visiting Philadelphia will find a host of other interesting sides to the city.
“From world-premiere exhibitions to only-in-Philadelphia events to restaurants that have garnered a great deal of James Beard accolades over the years are just some of the reasons to visit the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection this year!” he says.
“There is a reason that The Wall Street Journal referred to Philadelphia as a ‘booming cultural and culinary destination,’ so it’s no surprise that the city is on the top of bucket list travel destinations.”
Grymek adds that it is very easy to get to Philadelphia by plane, train or car from major Canadian cities. From Montreal, it is roughly a 7.5-hour drive and an 8-hour drive from Toronto and direct flights are roughly 1.5 hours.
“As the perfect enticement, VISIT PHILADELPHIA recently launched its new Three-Day Stay Package, where visitors can book two nights and get a third free at 11 participating hotels,” he adds.
“In addition, the city recently announced a revision of their popular Visit Philly Overnight Package available at 36 hotels, which includes free hotel parking and perks valued up to US$222.
“With quick flights and a scenic drive plus overnight hotel packages make this the perfect time to plan that visit to Philadelphia.”
Grymek adds that there is a strong connection between Philadelphia and this country, with, for example, well-known Toronto art historian, curator, and educator Corinne Chong recently appointed as assistant curator at the Barnes Foundation, which houses one of the world’s greatest collections of impressionist and modern art.
As well, Montreal conductor and pianist Yannick Nézet-Séguin is now in his 10th season as music director of The Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the leading orchestras in the world.
“I cannot stress enough how much this great city has to offer,” Grymek continues. “Looking for premiere exhibits? The Disney100: The Exhibition is making its world premiere in Philadelphia complete with themed galleries and interactive installations covering all of their popular films.
“Interested in horticulture? The Philadelphia Flower Show is the nation’s largest and the world’s longest-running horticultural event. Stunning displays by premier floral and landscape designers from around the globe.
“Hungry for food? Philadelphia’s booming dining scene continues to gain momentum and garner praise from renowned food lovers and publications. Drop by one of the 17 Philadelphia-based restaurants nominated for James Beard awards this year, recognizing outstanding restaurateurs, emerging chefs, and best new restaurants.
“Philadelphia is a must-visit city for Canadians, full of unique connections, unforgettable experiences and iconic locations!”
