Spas are common in the destination

Los Cabos tourism authorities say there’s is a great place for those wanting to literally shape up.

Rodrigo Esponda, head of the Los Cabos Tourist Board, told a recent Toronto gathering that the destination has some 85 hotels that have spas and tourists can also visit stand-alone spas.

“We want Los Cabos to champion wellness… traveller’s wanting to look and feel better,” Esponda told those on hand for the event, held at a fitness club. “We’re the perfect place for Canadian travellers to get realigned and reconnected.”

Visiting Canadians can find the likes of pointers on healthy eating habits, fitness classes and spa treatments.

Some 18% of those visiting Los Cabos request a wellness service and among tourism promotion slogans being used by the destination is, “You think you know wellness? Think again.”

Los Cabos’ tourism trade has been rebounding strongly from Covid, although Canadian visitations are lagging, with 80,000 of us visiting last year, well below 2019’s 200,000.

“I know this is going to be the year of Canadians going back to Los Cabos,” Esponda stated.

Esponda’s confidence results in part from winter Los Cabos air service being available from 11 cities in this country, with both long-established airlines and newer ones like Swoop and Flair offering the destination.

Golf helped put Los Cabos on the tourist map and today golfers can choose from 18 courses, with Esponda reporting that each hole on each course has a Pacific Ocean view.

The sunny, warm setting should make Los Cabos look attractive to golfers, he added. “Would you want to wait six months to golf or just come to Los Cabos?”

Esponda also said that waterworks enthusiasts will enjoy Los Cabos and the surrounding region, citing Cabo Pulmo, a national marine park found about two hours from San Jose del Cabo. The park serves as a shelter for the likes of whales, sharks and rays, and has a reef dating back 20,000 years.

“We want traveller’s to come and understand that this is not Disneyland,” Esponda said of the natural attraction.

Esponda also praised Los Cabos as a safe, family friendly part of the world and added it’s environmentally conscious, among other things limiting the height of buildings.

He also said English-speaking tourists will easily be able to communicate with locals as “even the tellers at Walmart” speak that language.
