Darcie Guarderas is inviting people to experience a seasonal ice age.
Guarderas is with Calgary-based Anderson Vacations, which has a Rocky Mountains program that includes Jasper National Park, which Guarderas says is great for outdoors enthusiasts.
And that, she adds, includes those wanting to be in the Great Outdoors during winter, with those visiting Jasper during that season able to go on walks that showcase what happens to H2O after temperatures fall below freezing.
“This is a great option for people that might not ski or snowboard but are looking for winter fun. You don’t have to be daring to enjoy an Icewalk, you just need a sense of adventure,” she says of the Maligne Canyon treks. “I have walked the canyon but it was about a week before it froze and it was beautiful then, I can only imagine how spectacular it is with frozen waterfalls, ice caves and incredible ice formations.”
Participants on the guided tours will also learn about area topography while exploring what Anderson Vacations labels the deepest easily accessible canyon in Jasper.
Icewalks are considered moderate activity and anyone 6 and older can enjoy the experience. Guests must dress appropriately for the weather and most of the 3.5 km tour is downhill, with Guarderas adding it’s not too strenuous.
Anderson Vacations is expecting heightened interest in the Rockies this year as international travel continues to remain a challenge.
“People are looking for fresh air,” Guarderas says. “We have, what I call, ‘these 4-walls syndrome.’ We need to get outdoors and see that magic that Mother Nature provides us.
“I have walked the canyon but it was about a week before it froze and it was beautiful then, I can only imagine how spectacular it is with frozen waterfalls, ice caves and incredible ice formations.
“Guests can be picked up from any Jasper hotel so it’s super easy to enjoy this tour. It is a must do for any traveler seeking outdoor adventure and crisp fresh air!”
