Two globetrotting travel advisors talk adventure travel insights and trends

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you like about booking adventure travel?

LL: What I love about booking adventure travel is how deeply it resonates with my soul. As a woman who enjoys more than just lounging by the pool, I’m drawn to exploring the full potential of each destination. Whether it’s hiking through breathtaking landscapes, chasing waterfalls, or immersing myself in unique cultural experiences, I’m constantly inspired by the endless possibilities that adventure travel offers. While I personally prefer to keep my feet on the ground, there’s always something thrilling and transformative about stepping out of your comfort zone to discover what the world has to offer.

SB: I’ve always had the urge to explore the world since childhood, my father was a great adventurer and planted a seed very young. I’ve been to 51 countries and I have a long bucket list left. When it comes to coordinating adventure travel, the excitement really comes from finding unique destinations and activities that push boundaries. There’s something thrilling about helping travellers step out of their comfort zones, whether it’s a jungle trek, mountain climb, or exploring a remote village in the Amazon rainforest.

What destinations and what types of trips are popular amongst your clients?

LL: While a significant number of my clients still dream of the classic beach escape, with Mexico remaining a top choice, I’ve noticed a growing interest in destinations that offer more than just sand and surf. The South Pacific and Europe are increasingly popular for travellers seeking richer, more immersive experiences. Interestingly, there’s also been a noticeable shift towards exploring closer to home. Many of my clients are inquiring about staying within Canada this year, and honestly, Canada has so much to offer. From breathtaking national parks to vibrant cities and unique cultural experiences, it’s a destination that truly surprises people with its diversity.

SB: Portugal and its lovely islands are still a hotspot for 2025 and the Galápagos Islands and Peru remain strong destinations.

Have you noticed that more people are looking for more active or adventurous trips?

LL: There’s a noticeable rise in people wanting to stay active, even on vacation. Whether it’s hiking, biking or incorporating wellness activities like yoga or paddleboarding, travellers are prioritizing their health and fitness while exploring new destinations. The idea of returning from a trip feeling physically and mentally rejuvenated has become a key focus for many. I love seeing how people are becoming more intentional about their travels. Adventure and active trips create opportunities to connect with nature, try new activities, and bond with others, whether it’s family, friends, or fellow travellers. It’s inspiring to witness a shift toward meaningful experiences that leave lasting memories. I continue to see the demand in active and adventure travel continue to increase.

SB: Yes, for example, hiking in the Azores and Madeira are quite popular lately due to their breathtaking nature and landscapes. I’ve even sold a Geluxe with some hiking in Japan. I think the best part is seeing how people discover a deeper connection with the world and themselves when they take on a new challenge. Adventure travel is all about creating unforgettable memories, and I love being a part of that journey.

I keep reading that solo travel and women, especially older women, are driving adventure travel bookings. Is this the case amongst your clients as well?

LL: As women, we often put our needs on hold while raising a family, building a career or finding our footing. It’s inspiring to see so many women now prioritizing themselves and chasing their dreams. For many, travel has become a way to reconnect with their passions, experience the world, and embrace new adventures—even if it means going solo. Women are no longer waiting for someone to join them; instead, they’re jumping into their journeys wholeheartedly. With so many incredible groups and communities available, it’s easier than ever to find like-minded adventurers. That’s why I created Alberta Women Who Wander the Globe, a local group for women to connect, hike, dine, and embark on exciting trips together. Recently, 13 of us explored Patagonia, hiking iconic routes like the W Trek, and I’m already planning our next big adventure: a women’s trek to Kilimanjaro in 2026. It’s amazing to see women supporting each other and embracing the world on their terms.

SB: Yes, 100 per cent, we’re seeing a surge in solo women travelling within small groups. Travel companies are offering more women-specific tours and experiences with a focus on safety, community and enriching experiences. Many women are embracing travel as a way to rediscover themselves, pursue new passions and challenge the traditional boundaries of what it means to travel.

Are you noticing any other trends based on demand or bookings?

LL: Other than active and adventure, travel is becoming more about connection, shared experiences and creating memories that span generations. Multigenerational and family travel are poised to be among the most significant trends shaping the industry, offering travellers a deeper sense of togetherness and purpose in their journeys.

When it comes to adventure travel, are you booking FIT experiences or does it tend to be group tours?

LL: While FIT plans remain a popular choice for couples seeking personalized adventures, I’ve noticed a significant rise in demand for women’s group tours this year. As someone who specializes in this niche, it’s clear to me that women are increasingly drawn to travel experiences that offer both adventure and camaraderie. These group tours create spaces for connection, empowerment and shared exploration, whether it’s hiking through scenic landscapes or indulging in wellness retreats. This growing trend reflects a shift towards travel that not only focuses on personal growth but also fosters lifelong friendships in supportive, women-centric environments.

SB: Small group travel is the way to go. You want a turnkey package and to be accompanied by a local guide that speaks the language and that’ll handle all the local customs and logistics for you.

Which adventure travel companies are the most trade friendly? What companies do you like working with and why?

LL: When it comes to adventure travel companies that are most trade-friendly, G Adventures is hands down my go-to choice. As a Canadian-based company, they have a special place in my heart and I appreciate their strong commitment to community impact and sustainable travel. What stands out most is their dedication to giving back through initiatives like the ‘G for Good’ program, which supports local projects and organizations in the destinations they visit. While there are many incredible adventure travel companies out there, I find that G Adventures aligns most closely with my values. Their focus on responsible travel, cultural immersion and authentic experiences makes them a fantastic choice for both travellers and agents. It’s a company I feel confident recommending and working with, and I look forward to expanding my partnerships with other incredible brands in the future. But for now, G Adventures remains my go-to for sustainable, community-driven travel experiences.

SB: My No. 1 go-to for adventure travel is G Adventures, for families, solo travellers, couples and friends. I’ve travelled with them 10 times in the last few years and absolutely every experience has touched my heart and soul. There’s no one I trust better for my precious clients.

What are some of the most epic trips that you’ve booked or have personally embarked on?

LL: One of the most epic travel experiences I’ve had recently was a 14-day hiking adventure in Patagonia, and what made it even more special was that I had the privilege of booking the same experience for 12 of my clients. The sheer beauty of Patagonia’s landscapes—rugged mountains, turquoise lakes, and vast glaciers—was enough to make this journey unforgettable. But it wasn’t just the views that left a lasting impact. For me, the highlight was completing my first overnight four-day backpacking trek, a challenge I’ll never forget. While the trek was made easier by staying at well-equipped camps with food provided, the experience of carrying. Almost everything I needed for four days in the wilderness and waking up each morning to the sounds of nature was truly transformative. The sense of accomplishment and the camaraderie shared with fellow hikers made this adventure one I’ll cherish forever. Patagonia’s wild beauty and the memories created with my clients will always hold a special place in my heart, and it’s a trip that exemplifies the power of outdoor exploration and the joy of shared experiences.

SB: The Amazon rainforest is amongst my favourites, immersing yourself in such an untouched and biodiverse environment is priceless. It’s a trip that offers so much, from river cruises to jungle treks, and the chance to connect with indigenous communities. The wildlife, the sounds, the sense of being in the heart of nature, the milky way lights up in the night and the jungle comes to life, it’s definitely an epic experience.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done during your travels?

SB: This is a tough one, it’s a toss up between trekking to Annapurna base camp in the Himalayas or hiking to the Lost City in the Columbian jungle. The high-altitude trek through the Himalayas was a physical challenge, but the views were worth every step. Reaching 4130 meters and seeing the Annapurna massif up close was breathtaking. Plus, experiencing the unique culture of the villages along the way and trekking in such an awe-inspiring mountain range is really a spiritual journey too.  On the other hand, hiking to the Ciudad Perdida in Colombia is another jaw-dropping adventure. The trek through the thick jungle, with its humidity and rugged terrain, and river crossings, it’s a true test of endurance. But once you reach the ancient city hidden in the jungle, it’s like stepping into another world. A lost world!

Do you have anything to add?

LL: Overall, I believe that travel is more than just visiting new places—it’s about the experiences we have, the connections we make, and the personal growth that comes with stepping outside our comfort zones. Whether it’s through adventure, wellness, or exploring different cultures, I feel fortunate to be able to share these journeys with others and help create lasting memories. I’m always excited to discover new destinations and look forward to continuing to inspire and guide others on their own adventures.

SB: I’ve got the best job ever – I sell happiness. Working with strong partners like G Adventures makes it so much easier.
