Las Coloradas is known for its pink lakes

Think pink when visiting this Mexican attraction

Some water bodies in the Mexican state of Yucatan clearly look pretty in pink. Those touring the state’s Las Coloradas Tourist Park are certain to see that particular hue during their visit, thanks to some unusual area characteristics, says the park’s Rocco Bova.

“Las Coloradas Tourist Park is the only sea salt factory which is open to visitors all year round and is also the only one that has the particularity to have pink lakes,” he reports. “The pink waters are a natural phenomenon which occurs thanks to microorganisms in the water. These small organisms have a pink pigment, which gives the colour to the water but also to the feathers of the flamingos which migrate in this protected area.”

The pink coloration is particularly visible during the March-August period, thanks to a stronger sun during that time of year. There are other sea salt factories in Mexico, with the world’s biggest being in Baja California, but which is not open to tourists unless they’re on specially organized visits, Bova adds. “Other small, family owned factories might allow visitors but none like Las Coloradas,” he notes.

Las Coloradas, found by the sea, is home to hundreds of bird species and many types of mammals and reptiles, including monkeys and sea turtles. Also found are what appear to be dunes made from white sand but which are actually mounds of salt.

Bova says a challenge for his attraction is that as of now there are no accommodations available for tourists to stay, other than very basic ones. Rio Lagartos, which is about a 30-minute drive, has several smallish hotels. However, Bova reports those involved with Las Coloradas plan to develop some hotels in the area, with the first being a 30-room, 4-star property. “We have just begun the process to get the permits.”

Las Coloradas is building an international following, with about 50% of its visitors coming from outside Mexico, and Bova reporting that it actively reaches out to foreign tourists. Bova adds that those visiting his attraction will find plenty of other points of interest in the area.

“From Merida or Cancun, reaching Las Coloradas is at about a three-hour drive,” he says. “When doing this day trip from either side we suggest visiting Rio Lagartos, a natural area to observe birds and other wildlife. There are also several cenotes nearby and the ‘Pueblo Magico’’ of Espita. Valladolid is at just over one hour and Chichen Itza one and half hours. So, there is  plenty to do really. Its better if visitors can stay overnight.”

Meanwhile, Bova is happy to put in a kind word for the jurisdiction he lives in.

“Yucatan is one of the most beautiful states in Mexico, there is so much to see and enjoy that a lifetime won’t be enough,” he states. “We are waiting for you and help you discover its wonders.”
