Q&A with Romance & Foodie Travel’s Deanna Beatty

Tell us a little about yourself and how long you’ve been a travel advisor?

My name is Deanna Beatty and I am a travel advisor from Ottawa, On. I have been in the industry since 2007, but took a pause to pursue other avenues and have a family. I got back into the industry in 2017 after planning my own destination wedding, and have been working full time as an advisor ever since.

Why did you decide to become a travel advisor?

I have always had a passion for travel and exploring new places and cultures, becoming a travel advisor allows me to help others experience that excitement you get from exploring the world. I wanted to help others create unforgettable experiences.

What do you specialize in?

Destination weddings, honeymoons, family travel.

What do you wish everybody knew about travel advisors?

That we can never take a normal vacation again! We are on call 24/7. But this also allows us to travel a lot more than the average person, as we can work remotely.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I love that the travel industry is ever-evolving, offering constant opportunities to learn about new destinations, travel trends and logistics. I also love the fact that I can work from anywhere in the world, so while learning about new destinations, I can also still be servicing my clients.

What destinations and types of trips are you booking right now?

I am always working on destination weddings throughout the year. Currently booking a lot of winter vacations to Mexico and the Dominican Republic

What do you do to grow your clientele?

I am constantly learning about new products and taking the time to really know what I am selling to my clients. Travelling to the places I want to sell, staying at properties, doing site visits. Most of my business has been built on referrals.

What’s your best piece of advice for new agents?

I think really knowing the product that you are selling, investing your time and money to gain that knowledge and expertise. Continuously learn about destinations, suppliers and industry trends. Establish relationships with suppliers, tour operators and other travel professionals. These connections are everything in the travel industry. Last but not least, set boundaries as this job can really take over your personal life.

Do you have anything to add?

Success takes time in this industry. Focus on building your network and reputation and learning everyday. I love being a travel advisor and could not see myself doing anything else!
